Eddie and I met in college.
We were best friends for 4 years before we started dating. 2
years into our relationship, we took a trip with another couple
to Kauai in the Hawaiian islands. We went on several hikes. The
11-mile trail along the Napali coast turned out to be my favorite.
We hiked 2 miles along the picturesque coast and then turned
and hiked 2 miles inland toward the 300 foot Hanakapi'ai Falls.
As we neared the pool of water at the foot of the falls, the
heat became overbearing and we all undressed into our bathing
suits / bikinis to go for a swim. There were other hikers there,
and as we neared the falls, everyone had just finished swimming
and were getting out. Eddie and I were the first to go in and
stand below the magnificent falls. The other couple just sat
on the rocks behind us with their camera ready. I was so excited
because I am always the picture-taker. I love it when someone
else takes pictures of Eddie and I. I told him to keep looking
up because they were taking our picture - little did I know why.
As we both stared up thigh-high in crystal clear water beneath
the spray of the falls, he told me he loved me and asked me to
marry him. Eddie is much taller than I, and I thought he was
just caught up in the moment as I looked up into his gorgeous
baby-blue eyes. That was until I looked down and saw the ring
in his hand. I was totally surprised and overjoyed. My hands
shook as I said yes and put on the ring. I jumped up and hugged
him and we held each other for quite a while. Tears of joy fell
down my cheeks. When we turned around, we had an audience. The
other couple knew about it the whole time. The pictures they
took captured every point of the proposal. The other hikers around
cheered for us and asked us where we were going to go for our
honeymoon now. As we got out, I told the other couple to take
a stroll into the pool of water. 'You'll come out with diamonds!'
Hanakapi'ai Falls in Kauai,
Hawaii are my favorite waterfalls. What made the proposal such
a surprise is that I had been searching for clues that he might
be proposing on this trip. Before we left, my mother made a comment
that she would like to see the diamond around my neck make it
to my finger. I was upset then because I knew he hadn't asked
for her permission to marry me yet which meant he wasn't going
to propose on the trip. What I later found out, was that Eddie
had asked my Step-father, and knowing my Mother, my Step-dad
had elected not to tell her yet. So it was the surprise of my
life!
